The Blog Plan

Some of my students have asked me what the plan for the blog is. Being New Years Eve, I thought it would be a good idea to write about the plan.

I guess the main reason I started the blog was to be creative. So much of my life is consumption. Consuming the news on TV, consuming the news via the Internet, consuming YouTube videos, consuming books, consuming streaming TV shows and on it goes. I thought it would be nice to create something.

A similar thought to consumption, is that most of my activities relate to looking at a screen. Apart from walking each day, I’m generally looking at a screen. The only other non-screen activity I could come up with is cooking and housework. The cooking/housework activities are not my favourite things to do and will be allocated to my household robot – once they become available 🙂

Anyway, here are some other ideas for the blog:

  • Use it for motivation to keep learning. Mainly around reading books but if I do a course I can also write about it here.
  • I’ve asked most of my students to be subscribers to the blog, so that they don’t have to visit the site to see if there is an update – it will just send emails to them.
  • I think next year I’m going to encourage my students to comment on my blog. Comments give the blog a bit of life.
  • I might also do some sort of challenges and write about them.
  • Maybe having a blog may encourage me to try adding more variety with my tutoring.
  • Write about where I do my outside broadcasts – talking from different location using a tablet, tripod and headset. I find it hard to read books and do writing away from home, but I do like to chat to my students from different locations.
  • I just thought of an idea while typing this in my garden. I could ask my students to do guest posts if they enjoy writing. I could help review the writing or we could run it through an AI.
  • I’m not sure I would want to write about individual students. One of my students suggested I should write about them but use a fictitious name. I will have to think about that one. Of course that would always be with the students permission if I did do something like this.

It’s funny I didn’t think too much about the plan for my blog. Usually I’m a big planner, I always have a plan. A five to ten year plan. It may not always work out, my future plan, but I’m pretty flexible about changing my plan if circumstances change. I feel people do better at life if they can plan for the long term. Otherwise life just kind of happens to them.

Sometimes I think about doing paid tutoring, but I think it would make tutoring a great deal more complicated. If I did paid tutoring I might be tempted to book in more students, over-extend myself and then burn out. Best to leave it as a volunteer option where I can easily control the number of hours I devote to it. Besides, my current students are more like my friends than students – so I would never charge them. It would be a matter of taking on new paid students if I went down that path.

I occasionally think of doing other types of online volunteering, but that’s just a thought bubble at the moment.

In other news, the blog currently has ten subscribers, which are my students 🙂

I’m interested to know, in the comments below, if you’re a planner?

My local (Australian rules football) park in Melbourne. With my setup I use for outdoor student sessions.
